Lesson 2 - Moving Beyong PowerPoint
In this lesson, you will read about redefining the role of the teacher in the classroom, something we touched on briefly in the first lesson. You will also read through a booklet on the “Top 10 Tips for Teaching with New Media”. You will look at online alternatives to using PowerPoint presentations, and then make a presentation that you’d use in your classroom.
PowerPoint Presentations have been used in the classroom for years. Yes, it uses technology, but it can be almost as boring to students as textbooks. There are much better options for presentations in the online digital world. Teachers or students could easily create interesting and intriguing presentations online.
New it’s your turn:
Step 1: Read this Edutopia article, “Redefining the Role of the Teacher: It's a Multifaceted Profession”
Step 2: Read “Top 10 Tips for Teaching with New Media”
Step 3: Watch this video explaining how Prezi can be used in education. Explore www.sliderocket.com and http://prezi.com/.
Activity:
Now you’re going to create a presentation on Prezi or Sliderocket (or on another online presentation-making website) that you will use in your classroom. You could start by updating one of your trusty PowerPoint presentations, or you could start from scratch. Think about a topic you’re teaching in your class and create an engaging presentation to help teach that topic. Don’t try to recreate a PowerPoint presentation with pointlessly dull bullet points. Get creative with your presentation! Keep in mind your goal is to keep the students engaged while also learning what you are trying to teach them. Another good thing to keep in mind is that creating great online presentations usually take longer than creating PowerPoint Presentations, so plan accordingly.
When your done, write the link to your presentation in the comment box below.
